Milnes Five-Wicket Haul Puts Kent in Command at Northwood
Matt Milnes took five wickets and contributed 32 with the bat as Kent built a 139-run lead over Middlesex by stumps on day two at Northwood.

Matt Milnes influenced the game with bat and ball as Kent took control of their County Championship match against Middlesex at Merchant Taylors' School in Northwood. BBC Sport reported that Kent made 350, dismissed Middlesex for 249 and then reached 38 for two in their second innings by the end of day two, giving the visitors an overall lead of 139 runs.

Milnes recorded his third five-wicket haul of the season, finishing with figures of 5-53. New-ball partner Matt Quinn supplied most of the remaining damage with 4-52, ensuring Middlesex conceded a first-innings deficit of 101 despite a late effort from Eathan Bosch.

Kent had resumed one run short of 300 and lost Keith Dudgeon after Ryan Higgins began the day with a no-ball. Milnes then contributed a valuable 32, including two on-drives for four off Higgins, and secured Kent's third batting bonus point before Higgins bowled him. Toby Roland-Jones removed Ekansh Singh and Matt Parkinson to complete a five-wicket haul of his own, while Higgins finished with 3-86.

Milnes made the initial breakthrough in Middlesex's reply when Tawanda Muyeye took a diving slip catch to dismiss Sam Robson. Max Holden survived an earlier chance off Quinn but was later bowled by a Milnes delivery that removed his off stump. Kent's two opening seamers took four wickets between them within eight overs after lunch, sharply reducing the home side's prospects of matching Kent's total.

Bosch provided resistance with an unbeaten 43 in his final appearance of the stint. Roland-Jones also counterattacked, taking 18 from one Quinn over and pulling Milnes for six, before Bosch helped Middlesex move beyond the follow-on threshold. Bosch was struck on the elbow by Quinn during his innings and was replaced by Noah Cornwell for Kent's second innings, a substitution BBC Sport said Kent queried.

Kent's second innings began poorly when Zak Crawley fell for a second-ball duck and Sam Northeast was also dismissed early. Muyeye, who survived a chance at third slip, joined Ben Compton in settling the innings before stumps. Their stand left Kent with eight second-innings wickets intact and a significant advantage entering day three.
