Somerset Beat Essex by Eight Wickets to Close on Division One Lead
Somerset completed an eight-wicket victory over Essex at Taunton and moved within two points of Nottinghamshire at the top of County Championship Division One.

Somerset moved to within two points of the County Championship Division One lead after completing an eight-wicket victory over Essex at Taunton on Sunday. The result earned Somerset 22 points while Essex collected two, tightening the race behind leaders Nottinghamshire.

Watch the highlights:

The hosts built the foundation of the win with a first-innings total of 469 after Essex had been dismissed for 158. Essex produced a far stronger response in their second innings, reaching 412 and forcing Somerset to bat again, but the recovery left the home side a target of only 102. The contrast between Essex's two innings extended the match into its final phase without overturning Somerset's advantage.

The Guardian's live report said Jack Leach took five wickets as Somerset worked through the Essex second innings on the final day. Simon Harmer and Shane Snater added 20 runs across 10 overs during a late attempt to extend the contest, but Somerset eventually closed out the innings and began a modest chase. Leach's intervention was central to preventing Essex from setting a more demanding target.

Josh Thomas and Lewis Goldsworthy were the two Somerset batters dismissed before the target was reached. Harmer took the first wicket with Somerset on 59, and Goldsworthy also fell before Sean Dickson's side finished on 103 for two. Tom Lammonby struck the winning runs off Harmer to confirm the eight-wicket margin.

The victory lifted Somerset to 133 points, directly behind Nottinghamshire on 135. Nottinghamshire retained first place by beating Surrey by 145 runs at The Oval, while Warwickshire's one-wicket win over Sussex left them third on 130 points. Essex remained seventh with 107 points, one point behind Yorkshire and Sussex, according to the table published after the day's play.

Somerset's next listed Championship fixture is away to Sussex at Hove, while Essex are due to host Surrey at Chelmsford. With the top three separated by five points after Sunday's results, the title contest remains closely grouped entering the next round. The standings and match details were reported by The Guardian in its final-day County Championship coverage.
