Record Opening Stand Carries Worcestershire to Eight-Wicket Win
Dan Lategan's maiden first-class century and an unbeaten hundred from Jake Libby carried Worcestershire to an eight-wicket County Championship victory over Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said Worcestershire reached 281 for two while chasing 279, completing the task with 4.5 overs remaining on the final day.
Watch the highlights:
Worcestershire had been given a minimum of 60 overs after Gloucestershire declared their second innings at 395 for seven. Lategan and Libby then shared an opening partnership of 244 to control the chase. Libby finished on 107 not out, while Lategan made 144 from 163 balls before falling with another 35 runs required.
Lategan's innings included 17 fours and five sixes and came after an immediate escape. The 20-year-old South African left-hander edged the first delivery of the innings to short leg, where James Boorman could not hold the chance. Lategan recovered to reach 50 from 48 balls and later passed his previous Championship best of 89, made against Derbyshire in May.
The opening pair took Worcestershire to tea at 110 without loss, leaving 169 more runs to score in at least 37 overs during the final session. Lategan reached three figures by pulling Ollie Price to the boundary. Libby remained in place after his partner departed and guided the chase to its conclusion as Worcestershire lost only two wickets.
Earlier, James Bracey scored 127 in Gloucestershire's second innings and added 102 with Price, who made 77. Miles Hammond contributed 57, while Worcestershire bowler Beyers Swanepoel took four wickets for 49 runs. Gloucestershire's declaration followed a first innings in which they scored 150 before Worcestershire replied with 267.
The win earned Worcestershire 20 points and lifted them to fourth in Division Two, according to the BBC report. Gloucestershire collected three points but remained at the bottom of the table after an eighth defeat in nine Championship matches. Worcestershire are scheduled to host Lancashire on Thursday, while Gloucestershire are due to visit Durham on the same day.
