Nottinghamshire moved three points clear at the top of County Championship Division One after beating Surrey at the Oval, with Olly Stone taking 10 wickets across the match. The contest remained finely balanced after 23 wickets fell across the opening two days. Nottinghamshire's position became more secure in their second innings when Joe Clarke and Kyle Verreynne added 110 runs together after the fourth wicket fell. At that stage, Nottinghamshire's lead had been 169, but the partnership helped raise Surrey's eventual victory target to 329.

Surrey's chase was led by Ollie Pope, who made 111. According to The Guardian's match roundup, however, no other Surrey batter passed captain Rory Burns' 16. That lack of support allowed Nottinghamshire's attack to control the innings despite Pope's century and complete a significant away victory against a side that won three successive Championship titles from 2022 through 2024.

Stone was the decisive bowler, finishing with a 10-wicket match haul. Dillon Pennington also claimed five wickets during the game, giving Nottinghamshire's pace attack a central role in the result. The win placed Nottinghamshire three points ahead at the Division One summit. Somerset remained close after defeating Essex at Taunton, where a 311-run first-innings advantage ultimately helped set up a chase of 102. Somerset collected 22 points from that victory and stayed only two points behind the leaders, according to The Guardian.

Warwickshire are also in contention after edging Sussex at Edgbaston, with Chris Woakes making an unbeaten 23 to guide the chase. They trail Nottinghamshire by five points and will host the leaders next. That fixture gives Nottinghamshire an immediate test of the advantage earned through Stone's bowling and the crucial second-innings stand between Clarke and Verreynne.
