Shadab century and record last-wicket stand rescue Pakistan against England
Pakistan recovered from 154-9 to defeat England by one wicket in Lahore on Sunday, with Shadab Khan's unbeaten century turning a chase that had appeared almost over. Chasing 242, the hosts reached 243-9 in 47.1 overs at Gaddafi Stadium, winning with 17 balls remaining, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board's match report and scorecard.
Watch the highlights:
Shadab finished on 113 from 96 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and five sixes. He had arrived with Pakistan already struggling at 103-6, then carried the chase through further wickets. Haris Rauf contributed seven not out from 19 balls as the final pair added an unbroken 89 in 80 deliveries.
The ICC reported that their partnership was the largest for the tenth wicket in a successful men's ODI chase, surpassing the unbeaten 64 shared by West Indies pair Deryck Murray and Andy Roberts against Pakistan at the 1975 World Cup. Shadab also set the men's ODI record for an individual score batting at number eight or lower.
England briefly thought they had secured victory when Shadab was given out lbw to Gus Atkinson on 97, with Pakistan still needing 21. BBC Sport reported that the players had shaken hands before a review revealed an inside edge and overturned the decision. Rauf eventually struck debutant Henry Crocombe for the boundary that completed the chase.
Earlier, Ben Duckett supplied 105 from 111 balls in England's total of 241 all out. The PCB scorecard showed England losing their first three wickets for 19 before Duckett and Sam Curran rebuilt with a 93-run partnership. Curran made 42, while Shaheen Shah Afridi finished with four wickets for 46.
England's lower order also produced a useful final-wicket contribution. Atkinson, unbeaten on 36, and Crocombe added 40 after the visitors slipped to 201-9. England were eventually dismissed in 46.4 overs, but Jamie Overton's subsequent three for 43 helped put them within one wicket of defending that total.
The result gave Pakistan a third consecutive victory in the tri-series and left England with three defeats from three matches, the PCB reported. England's elimination was not yet confirmed: according to BBC Sport, a Sri Lanka victory over Pakistan on Tuesday would end their hopes before their final match against Sri Lanka on Thursday.
