Raine and Carse steady Durham after Morgan four-wicket haul

Ben Raine made an unbeaten 58 before Brydon Carse struck twice with the ball as Durham recovered from a difficult first innings against Middlesex on day one of their County Championship Division Two match at Chester-le-Street. BBC Sport’s match report recorded Durham at 252 all out and Middlesex at 70-2 at the close, leaving the visitors 182 runs behind.

Middlesex chose to bowl and gradually reduced the Division Two leaders to 80-4. Naavya Sharma removed openers Ben McKinney and Will Rhodes, before 19-year-old Seb Morgan dismissed Mayank Agarwal for a 25-ball duck and had Graham Clark caught at second slip. Durham captain Alex Lees had reached 48 when Morgan found his inside edge shortly after lunch.

A rain interruption briefly slowed Middlesex’s progress, but Ryan Higgins took three wickets after play resumed. He dismissed Ollie Robinson leg before wicket, had Kasey Aldridge caught behind and removed Carse with a catch at point. Morgan then claimed his fourth wicket when Colin Ackermann was caught behind, leaving Durham’s last pair to repair the innings.

Raine and Callum Parkinson added 90 for the 10th wicket, lifting Durham beyond 250. Raine reached his third half-century of the season and finished 58 not out, while Parkinson made 26 before Sharma trapped him leg before wicket. Morgan ended with 4-78, Sharma took 3-38 and Higgins returned 3-63, accounting for all 10 Durham wickets.

Middlesex then faced 19 overs before stumps. Sam Robson and Luke Hollman began the reply, but Carse had Hollman caught at third slip and later removed Robson for 26 in the same manner. Nathan Fernandes and Max Holden remained unbeaten through the close as Middlesex reached 70-2, with Carse finishing the day on 2-18.

The result of the opening day left both sides with work to do. Durham collected one point and Middlesex three, according to the BBC report. Durham entered the fixture knowing that a 17-point return would secure promotion to Division One, while fourth-placed Middlesex’s first objective is to close the remaining first-innings deficit when play resumes.
