Naomi Osaka Battles Past Katerina Siniakova to Reach US Open Third Round

Naomi Osaka advanced to the third round of the US Open after overcoming Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at Flushing Meadows. The Guardian reported that the two-time champion had appeared to be in control before tension late in the second set forced her into a decider.

Osaka took the opening set comfortably and then moved a break ahead in the second. Siniakova resisted, however, and capitalized as Osaka's level tightened near the end of the set. That reversal extended a match that had looked likely to finish in straight sets and presented Osaka with an immediate test of composure.

The response was emphatic. Osaka reset in the deciding set and allowed Siniakova only one game, turning a difficult middle stretch into a convincing finish. According to The Guardian, Osaka drew on memories of other demanding three-set matches, including her 2019 Australian Open final victory over Petra Kvitova, as she worked through the pressure.

The win followed another close contest in Osaka's opening round. She defeated Anastasia Zakharova 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3), having surrendered a break advantage in both sets before prevailing in two tie-breaks. The first two rounds have therefore required Osaka to recover from missed opportunities while still finding a route through each match.

Osaka arrived in New York after her strongest clay- and grass-court Grand Slam results, reaching the fourth round of the French Open and the Wimbledon quarter-finals. At Wimbledon she defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round before her run ended in the last eight. Those results preceded her return to the North American hard courts, where she won the US Open in 2018 and 2020.

Her draw could become more demanding quickly, with second seed Elena Rybakina a possible fourth-round opponent if both players advance. Elsewhere in New York, 2022 champion Iga Swiatek beat Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 6-2, while Marie Bouzkova defeated British qualifier Harriet Dart 6-2, 6-2. In the men's draw, Karen Khachanov came from behind to beat Félix Auger-Aliassime 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
