Luke Charlesworth to retire at 23 after back injury

Gloucestershire seamer Luke Charlesworth will retire at the end of the season after a back injury ended his hopes of continuing his cricket career. BBC Sport reported on Monday that the 23-year-old had been advised to stop playing to protect his long-term wellbeing.

Charlesworth said specialists had considered every option before recommending retirement. He described the decision as painful and frustrating, explaining that three years of recurring rehabilitation had kept him from reaching his potential. He has not played since sustaining his latest injury at the start of August.

The announcement comes less than a year after Gloucestershire gave him a new one-year professional contract covering the 2026 season. In a club announcement published by Cricket World on September 30, 2025, Gloucestershire had backed the bowler to compete for opportunities once he was fully fit again.

That earlier statement described an already difficult period for Charlesworth, with two significant injury setbacks restricting his availability across successive campaigns. A lower-back problem had kept him out for much of 2025, despite encouraging performances in pre-season matches and for the second XI. His new deal offered a further chance to establish himself in the senior side.

Charlesworth joined Gloucestershire on a rookie contract in 2022 while also studying at Exeter University. His first-class debut followed against Leicestershire in 2023, when he took three wickets. His move from university cricket into the county side was repeatedly interrupted by injuries.

Head coach Mark Alleyne supported the extension at the time, saying Charlesworth's limited opportunities had largely reflected another injury-disrupted season. Alleyne believed a fully fit Charlesworth could challenge for selection in 2026. The bowler, meanwhile, had welcomed the chance to remain in Bristol and thanked those at the club who had supported him.

According to BBC Sport, Charlesworth has made 11 appearances across formats and taken 11 wickets for Gloucestershire. His best return was 3-42 against Kent in this summer's One-Day Cup. He is the younger brother of Gloucestershire all-rounder Ben Charlesworth.
