Lawrence fifty strengthens England’s grip on rain-hit Lord’s Test

Dan Lawrence made an unbeaten 50 as England tightened their control of the second Test against Pakistan during a rain-disrupted third day at Lord’s on Saturday. BBC Sport reported that England closed on 177-7 in their second innings, a lead of 357, after only 24.5 overs were possible.

England had resumed on 81-3 after making 290 in their first innings and dismissing Pakistan for 110. Persistent rain delayed the start until 2:40 p.m. local time and caused repeated interruptions before the players left the field for the final time at 5:08 p.m. Play was abandoned at 6:30 p.m., despite the possibility that an additional hour could have been used.

Pakistan’s seamers exploited a responsive pitch, overcast conditions and uneven bounce. Muhammad Abbas dismissed Emilio Gay for 31 when a low delivery trapped the opener leg before wicket. Abbas, who had taken four wickets in England’s first innings, finished the day with second-innings figures of 3-48.

Lawrence and Harry Brook added 45 for the fifth wicket in difficult batting conditions. Brook made 34 before wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan caught him standing up to the stumps. England then lost wickets at regular intervals around the stoppages, but Lawrence continued to score while also absorbing several blows from deliveries that lifted sharply.

After reaching 19 from 39 balls, Lawrence increased the tempo. He struck Mohammad Ali for a four and a six in successive deliveries, later hit spinner Ali Usman for six, and completed his fifth Test half-century from 64 balls. The innings followed another fifty in the first Test and strengthened his case for a continued place in England’s reshaped batting lineup.

England remain strongly placed to pursue victory and a series win, although weather and batting conditions leave the outcome unfinished. Pakistan would need at least 358 to win if England declared without adding to their total. BBC Sport noted that Pakistan had scored only 416 runs across three completed innings in the series, while opener Imam-ul-Haq could be unavailable because of injury.
