Kent Set Worcestershire 380 as Northeast Century Shapes Canterbury Contest

Kent moved into a strong position against fellow County Championship promotion contenders Worcestershire after setting the visitors 380 to win at Canterbury. BBC Sport, carrying the ECB Reporters' Network account, reported that Worcestershire reached 84-3 before bad light ended the third day with 11.5 overs still scheduled, leaving them 286 runs short of their target.

Sam Northeast supplied the foundation for Kent's second-innings total of 358, advancing from 96 overnight to 132. Play had resumed at 197-3 after rain removed 12 overs from the day, and Northeast completed his first century at Canterbury since returning to Kent by glancing Ben Allison for four through third man.

Northeast and Daniel Bell-Drummond shared 127, the largest partnership of the match. Bell-Drummond also passed 10,000 first-class runs for Kent before falling for 44 to the final ball of the morning session, driving the new ball back to Allison. Northeast was dismissed by the first delivery he faced after lunch when Tom Taylor's inswinger struck his middle and leg stumps.

Taylor continued to lead Worcestershire's resistance with the ball. He bowled Grant Stewart for 15 and had Keith Dudgeon caught at first slip for a duck, completing figures of 4-68 in the innings and 7-123 in the match. Matt Milnes contributed 20 in a 45-run stand with Chris Benjamin, while Benjamin was left unbeaten on 36 when Hasan Mahmud was run out attempting an extra run.

Worcestershire's chase then began badly. Matt Quinn removed Rehan Edavalath with his second ball, while Milnes dismissed Dan Lategan leg before wicket and then had Jake Libby out for 18. Those strikes reduced the visitors to 39-3 and gave Milnes match figures of five wickets at that stage.

Captain Brett D'Oliveira and Adam Hose prevented further damage with an unbroken recovery before the light deteriorated. D'Oliveira closed on 24 not out and Hose on 23 not out, taking Worcestershire to 84-3. Kent had made 238 in their first innings and Worcestershire replied with 217, so the final day will begin with the visitors still facing a demanding chase and Kent needing seven wickets.
