Jacob Fearnley and Harriet Dart Rally Into US Open Second Round

Jacob Fearnley completed a five-set comeback against Martin Landaluce on Monday to reach the second round of the US Open, while fellow Briton Harriet Dart also advanced after recovering from a set down. The Lawn Tennis Association reported that Fearnley won 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 after Landaluce twice served for the match.

The first-round contest resumed on Court 12 after rain interrupted the opening set on Sunday. Landaluce finished that set when play restarted, but Fearnley responded by taking the second in a little more than 30 minutes. The Briton then moved 3-1 ahead in the third before Landaluce regained control, winning the set and building a 5-2 lead in the fourth.

Fearnley reversed the match from that position. According to the LTA account, he broke Landaluce three consecutive times and won five straight games to claim the fourth set 7-5. The run ended on Landaluce's fifth double fault of the set, sending the match into a decider after the Spaniard had been close to closing it out.

The momentum carried into the fifth set as Fearnley established a commanding lead. Landaluce recovered one break when trailing 5-1, but Fearnley served out the match to love at his second opportunity. The contest lasted four hours and 13 minutes. Tennis.com listed Fearnley, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser, as the winner after nine breaks of serve across the match.

Dart produced another British recovery on the same court, defeating Peyton Stearns 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. She had trailed by a set and a break before turning the match around, then broke Stearns three times in the deciding set. The result was Dart's first Grand Slam main-draw victory of the 2026 season and matched her best previous US Open run.

Fearnley, 25, has now reached the US Open second round in consecutive years and will face 27th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Dart's next opponent is 25th seed Marie Bouzkova. Their victories put both players through after difficult opening-round assignments in New York, with each needing to recover after falling behind.
