Henry Crocombe Hat-Trick Sparks Essex Collapse Against Sussex

Henry Crocombe claimed his second hat-trick in successive matches as Sussex seized control against Essex on the second day of their County Championship fixture at Chelmsford. The Guardian reported that Essex suffered a dramatic collapse, losing seven wickets for six runs in 26 balls before Sussex extended their advantage in the evening session.

Crocombe removed Simon Harmer, Zaman Akhter and Shane Snater in succession to complete the hat-trick. He finished with five wickets as Essex were dismissed for 177 in reply to Sussex's first-innings total of 275, giving the visitors a lead of 98 before they batted again.

The achievement continued an exceptional sequence for the Sussex bowler, who has now taken a hat-trick in each of his past two games. It also arrived with a move already on his horizon: the Guardian noted that Crocombe is due to join Surrey at the end of the season. His intervention transformed a competitive Essex innings into a substantial Sussex advantage.

Sussex did not progress without trouble in their second innings. They reached the close on 90 for four, leaving them 188 runs ahead with six wickets remaining. That position gives Sussex control of the match, although the loss of four second-innings wickets keeps Essex involved with two days still available.

There was also a notable England-related development during the day. Essex seamer Sam Cook was withdrawn from the match midway through after being called away by England, according to the Guardian's report. The change removed one of Essex's established bowlers as they attempted to limit Sussex's second-innings lead.

Crocombe's hat-trick was the clearest individual highlight on a day dominated by bowlers across the competition. At the Oval, Surrey were dismissed for 83 before Matt Fisher returned career-best figures of six for 25 as Yorkshire fell for 82. In the Chelmsford contest, however, Sussex's 188-run cushion at stumps was built around Crocombe's five-wicket burst and the seven-wicket Essex collapse it produced.
