Head unbeaten on 87 as Australia end fourth day 170 runs behind South Africa
Travis Head reached stumps unbeaten on 87, but Australia remained 170 runs behind at 156-4 after following on in Gqeberha. South Africa have one day left to turn their advantage into a series-levelling victory.

Travis Head finished unbeaten on 87 as Australia reached 156-4 at stumps on Wednesday, still trailing South Africa by 170 runs in the second Test in Gqeberha. Cricbuzz reported that the tourists lost three wickets after a second-wicket recovery, leaving Head and nightwatchman Scott Boland together at the end of day four.

Watch the highlights:

Australia's second innings began with another early setback when Kagiso Rabada removed Nic Maddinson in the third over. Head and Marnus Labuschagne then added 92, batting together for nearly 30 overs. According to Cricbuzz, Labuschagne survived an lbw decision on review before his attempt to attack Simon Harmer ended with Marco Jansen taking a running catch.

The loss of Labuschagne opened another difficult spell for Australia. Rabada bowled Matt Renshaw as the batter left the ball, and Harmer trapped Beau Webster lbw. Cricbuzz's closing score summary put Rabada's second-innings figures at 2-30 and Harmer's at 2-47. Head remained unbeaten after facing 138 deliveries, but the partnership with Labuschagne had not been enough to erase the deficit or prevent further wickets.

Sky Sports reported that Head struck nine fours and Boland finished on two not out. Australia had been 50-1 at tea before South Africa regained momentum in the final session. The hosts are seeking to level the three-Test series after losing the opener in Durban, while Australia must negotiate the remaining day with six second-innings wickets standing.

Earlier, Jansen's 5-33 had helped dismiss Australia for 99 and establish a first-innings lead of 326. Sky Sports reported that Rabada took 2-33 and Wiaan Mulder 2-14, with Steve Smith's 28 the highest Australian score. South Africa then enforced the follow-on, requiring the visitors to start another innings on the same day as their collapse.

The bowling performance followed South Africa's recovery from 110-6 to a declaration at 425-9. Captain Temba Bavuma made 179 from 334 balls, while Jansen contributed 85 before taking his five wickets, according to Sky Sports. Head's resistance ensured the match reached its final day without a result, but Australia remained behind even after batting twice, with South Africa still in position to press for victory.
