Debutant Bin Naeem Drives Derbyshire Reply After Bracey Century

Mohammed Bin Naeem marked his Derbyshire debut with 71 as the visitors reached 162-2 by stumps on the second day of their County Championship Division Two match against Gloucestershire in Bristol. Derbyshire ended the day 75 runs behind after Gloucestershire were dismissed for 237, according to the BBC Sport report supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network.

James Bracey provided the foundation of Gloucestershire's innings with 113, his 20th first-class century. The home side had been reduced to 37-5 on the opening day and resumed at 62-5, but Bracey led the recovery despite nine overs being lost to rain. He reached his half-century from 90 deliveries and later completed his fourth hundred of the season.

Bracey shared stands of 43 with Ed Middleton, 49 with Sai Kishore and 79 with Will Williams for the sixth, seventh and eighth wickets. His innings lasted 166 balls and included 12 fours before Martin Andersson found the edge and wicketkeeper Brooke Guest completed the catch at 207-8. Williams contributed 42 from 106 balls to help extend the innings.

Brett Randell finished with 5-41 from 17.2 overs for Derbyshire. He dismissed Kishore for 22 before returning to remove Matt Taylor and Williams as Gloucestershire's innings ended. Ben Aitchison had earlier accounted for Middleton, who was caught behind for 17, while Bracey survived a chance on 39 when Guest dropped an inside edge off Shoaib Bashir.

Derbyshire's response began with a 70-run opening partnership between Bin Naeem and Harry Came. Williams broke the stand by trapping Came lbw for 43, but Bin Naeem and Matthew Montgomery then added 91 for the second wicket. Bin Naeem reached 50 from 95 balls, hitting six fours and a six, and became Derbyshire's first player to make a half-century on debut since Tony Borrington scored 70 against Essex in 1971.

Kishore had Bin Naeem caught behind in the penultimate over, leaving Montgomery unbeaten on 40 at the close. Derbyshire took three points from the first two days while Gloucestershire had yet to collect a point. The BBC report said the surface was expected to offer some assistance to spin on days three and four, with Derbyshire positioned to pursue a first-innings lead when play resumes.
