Ben Stokes Dismisses Reports of Split with McCullum, Vows New Approach
England Test captain denies reports of disagreement with head coach Brendon McCullum, saying they will work together differently following the Ashes defeat.

Ben Stokes has moved quickly to quash speculation of a rift between himself and England head coach Brendon McCullum, insisting the pair remain firmly united despite a disastrous Ashes campaign that left many questioning their tactical direction.

In a video released by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Stokes addressed the situation directly, acknowledging that total agreement between himself and McCullum would be neither realistic nor healthy. "As similar as me and Brendon are, we are also dissimilar in other areas as well," Stokes said. "But the thing we both want is to be as successful as we possibly can. How we get to being successful might be the same here, but slightly differs there — but we will always end up in the same place by having these discussions."

The England captain revealed that the two see eye to eye on approximately 95 percent of decisions, with the remaining five percent requiring honest conversation before reaching consensus. "We agree 95 percent of the time on things, but those 5 percent things that we might have different views on, we talk about it between each other and then we end up getting to the place where we want to get to. Agreeing on every single thing, that is just impossible. Saying we were not aligned, I think, is a massive overstatement."

The 34-year-old was instrumental in pushing for McCullum to retain his position following the 4-1 Ashes defeat over the winter. Reports suggested the pair criticized each other during the ECB internal review, yet Stokes remained publicly supportive of the New Zealander. The ECB ultimately kept McCullum in place but made clear that higher standards of professionalism are expected going forward.

During the series, observers noted a visible shift in approach. After three and a half years of encouraging aggressive batting, Stokes switched tactics at 2-0 down, suddenly emphasizing caution and a higher price on wickets. The move produced confusing results, none more so than the series-sealing defeat in Adelaide, where conditions typically favorable to aggressive stroke-making were met with unusual restraint. McCullum, while reportedly frustrated privately, declined to publicly question his captain.

This summer brings New Zealand and Pakistan to English shores, with tours of South Africa and Bangladesh following next winter before a one-off Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground marking the 150th anniversary of the format. Stokes, who underwent surgery on a broken cheekbone after being struck by a stray ball in February, is expected to resume his season with Durham when they face Worcestershire on May 8.

Despite the critics and the heavy Ashes loss, Stokes remains confident about what lies ahead. "I am very confident in mine and Brendon's ability to be able to work together, because we have done it for such a long period of time now," he said. "The main point of me and Brendon is our alignment towards winning things and making this team as good as they can be. It might just look a little bit different now to how that operates — on the back of four years working together. We still want to win everything, and we still want to give the guys the best chance that they possibly can of being as good as they can be."
