Bamber seals Warwickshire’s ninth County Championship title with five-wicket haul

Warwickshire secured their ninth County Championship title on Saturday by defeating Leicestershire by an innings and 79 runs at Edgbaston. According to the Guardian’s match report, Ethan Bamber completed the victory by bowling Tom Scriven, finishing with second-innings figures of five for 52 as the Bears moved beyond the reach of their title rivals.

The decisive advantage had been built with the bat on Friday. Leicestershire’s official report recorded Sam Hain’s 142 from 301 deliveries and captain Ed Barnard’s 88 from 155 balls in Warwickshire’s total of 372. Their fifth-wicket stand contributed 165 runs across 50 overs, turning a narrow overnight advantage into a first-innings lead of 247 after the visitors had been dismissed for 125.

Hain and Barnard had resumed with Warwickshire on 130 for four and added 51 without losing a wicket during a morning interrupted by bad light. Ajaz Patel eventually returned three for 78 and Josh Hull three for 79, but Hain continued to hold the innings together. His century was the 21st of his first-class career, and he shared another 35 runs with last man Olly Hannon-Dalby before being caught at slip.

Leicestershire ended the second day on 55 for three. Bamber had removed Sheridon Gumbs and Rishi Patel within three deliveries, before Chris Woakes trapped Steve Eskinazi lbw following another stoppage for poor light. That left Warwickshire needing seven more wickets when play resumed on Saturday, with Leicestershire still facing a substantial deficit.

Woakes dismissed Sol Budinger and Jonny Tattersall on the final morning, with Rob Yates taking the latter’s catch at slip. Bamber’s wickets included Ben Green’s dismissal to a one-handed catch by Will Young. Ian Holland made 23 and Scriven 49 to extend the contest beyond lunch, but the match ended seven balls after the interval.

The Guardian reported that Bamber finished with 69 Division One wickets, the most in the competition, while Hain contributed 1,048 runs across the campaign. Warwickshire’s latest championship was their fourth since 2004.
