Bad light leaves Shadman on 99 as Bangladesh reach 213 for three
Bad light interrupted Bangladesh's first innings with Shadman Islam unbeaten on 99 and the hosts 213 for three against West Indies on the opening day of the first Test in Mirpur on Wednesday. According to BBC Sport's live scorecard, 74 overs had been completed when play was delayed at Shere Bangla National Stadium. West Indies had yet to begin their reply.
Watch the highlights:
Shadman had faced 219 balls and struck 10 fours, leaving him one run short of a century when the interruption arrived. Litton Kumer Das was the other unbeaten batter, on 10 from 28 deliveries with one boundary. The scorecard listed the match as delayed because of bad light, rather than recording a completed day's play, so Shadman's wait for the milestone remained unresolved.
Bangladesh had chosen to bat after winning the toss but lost Tanzid Hasan Tamim for seven with the total on nine. Justin Greaves took the catch off Jayden Seales in the seventh over. Mominul Haque then contributed 28 from 51 balls before being caught by Shamar Joseph off Jomel Warrican, leaving Bangladesh 68 for two in the 22nd over.
Warrican also removed captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was out leg before wicket for 19 from 42 deliveries. That dismissal brought the total to 110 for three in the 36th over. Bangladesh subsequently advanced to 213 without another wicket being recorded, although Tawhid Hridoy retired hurt after making 42 from 84 balls. BBC's scorecard did not specify the reason for his retirement or whether he would resume his innings.
Warrican led the wicket-taking for West Indies with two for 33 from 14 overs, including one maiden. Seales had one for 14 from eight overs, three of them maidens. Joshua Bishop had delivered the most overs among the visiting bowlers, returning figures of none for 50 from 19. Roston Chase, Greaves and Joseph were also without a wicket at the interruption.
Bangladesh's total included eight extras, while Shadman remained the innings' leading scorer ahead of Hridoy. With three wickets down and Hridoy listed separately as retired hurt, the immediate position was an unfinished first innings, not a final daily score. The remaining Bangladesh batting line-up included Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam.
