Bad Light Delays Durham Victory After Aldridge Nine-Wicket Haul

Bad light denied Durham the chance to complete a three-day County Championship victory over Gloucestershire at Chester-le-Street, leaving the Division Two leaders needing four runs when play resumes. Kasey Aldridge took 4-47 in Gloucestershire's second innings to finish with a career-best nine-wicket match haul, according to the ECB Reporters' Network account published by BBC Sport.

Durham began day three on 331-8 and advanced to 384, securing a first-innings lead of 247 after Gloucestershire had made 137. Brydon Carse struck 20 and Matthew Potts added 15 before the innings ended. Aldridge had already taken 5-16 in Gloucestershire's first innings, then contributed again as Durham's lower order extended the advantage.

Carse and Potts quickly reduced Gloucestershire to 7-2 in their second innings. Cameron Bancroft and Miles Hammond stabilized the visitors, taking the score to 50-2 by lunch before building a century partnership for the fourth wicket. Hammond reached his half-century from 80 balls and made 58, while Bancroft contributed 46.

Aldridge broke the stand by finding Hammond's edge, then had Bancroft caught at second slip in his next over. Tommy Boorman followed soon afterward, and Aldridge later bowled Daz Ahmed for a 14-ball duck to reach nine wickets in a first-class match for the first time. Carse removed James Bracey as Gloucestershire's resistance weakened after tea.

With the light deteriorating, Durham had to turn from their pace attack to Colin Ackermann and Will Rhodes. Ackermann took two wickets, but Sai Kishore and JT Langridge added 39 for the final wicket. Kishore finished unbeaten on 29 and Langridge made 36, allowing Gloucestershire to reach 250 and set Durham a target of four.

The players did not return for Durham's chase, with BBC Sport reporting that Gloucestershire declined to bowl spin in the poor light. Play was called off shortly after 18:20 BST, pushing the match into a fourth day despite the minimal target. Durham collected six points and Gloucestershire three through the first three days; the leaders remain positioned for a seventh victory in 10 matches if they complete the chase.
