Alcaraz and Mensik seal Europe's 3-1 opening-day Laver Cup lead

Team Europe finished the opening day of the Laver Cup with a 3-1 advantage over Team World after Carlos Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik won their doubles match at London's O2 Arena on Friday. According to the Guardian's report from the venue, the pair beat Alexander Bublik and Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to complete a day in which Europe also secured two singles victories.

Casper Ruud earned Europe's first win by recovering from a set down against Francisco Cerundolo. The Norwegian lost the opening-set tiebreak 7-4 but took the second set 6-4 and edged the deciding match tiebreak 10-8. His comeback gave Europe the opening result before Team World responded through Brandon Nakashima in another contest settled by a match tiebreak.

Nakashima defeated Mensik 6-1, 3-6, 10-7, securing Team World's only victory of the day. Mensik therefore ended his singles appearance on the losing side before returning alongside Alcaraz for the doubles. The Czech player's two appearances produced contrasting outcomes, with his later win contributing to Europe's two-point cushion at the close of play.

Rafael Jodar delivered Europe's other singles success, beating Bublik 6-2, 6-3 on his debut at the O2. The 19-year-old Spaniard built a 6-2, 4-0 lead before completing the victory in straight sets. The Guardian described his groundstrokes and return play as central to a performance that put Bublik under sustained pressure. Bublik subsequently returned for doubles but finished the day without a win in either appearance.

For Alcaraz, the doubles result was also another step in his return from a right wrist injury. The Guardian reported that he had been sidelined for four and a half months, from April until August, and had returned to tournament play at the US Open. That comeback event ended with a defeat by Ben Shelton in a fifth-set tiebreak.

Alcaraz also took an active role on Europe's bench, offering Ruud tactical suggestions during the opening match, including using drop shots and backhands down the line against Cerundolo. Speaking about the remainder of his season, he said he felt mentally fresh and physically well while still seeking his best tennis. His doubles victory supplied a winning finish to Europe's opening day.
