Cameron Norrie Advances in Madrid Open, Set for First Career Showdown with Jannik Sinner
Cameron Norrie is through to the next round of the Madrid Open after a composed 6-4, 6-4 victory on Sunday, and now the British number two is set for a landmark first career meeting with Jannik Sinner. The Italian star, currently ranked second in the world, progressed comfortably in his own match earlier in the day, setting up what promises to be a fascinating contest under the Madrid lights.
Norrie, currently ranked 28th in the world, showed exactly why he has earned his place among the ATP Tour's most consistent performers. He served exceptionally well throughout, winning 84 percent of points behind his first serve, and converted two of five break point opportunities to claim the match in straight sets.
"I've watched Jannik play a lot over the past couple of years. He's an incredible talent, one of the best in the world right now," Norrie said in his post-match press conference. "This is a great opportunity for me. I've played a lot of big matches but this would be my first time facing him. I'm looking forward to testing myself against the best."
The match will take place on Tuesday, with Norrie entering as a significant underdog against Sinner, who has won four titles already this season. Sinner has been in scintillating form on clay this spring, dropping only one set across his last three tournaments. However, Norrie's win-loss record in ATP Masters 1000 events suggests he will not be easily swept aside.
The winner of that clash will face either Andrey Rublev or Casper Ruud in the semi-finals. Norrie has never advanced past the quarter-finals at the Madrid Open before, making this a potentially historic week for the 30-year-old from London.
