Tom Abell hits 307 as Somerset finish season with Surrey draw

Tom Abell scored a career-best 307 as Somerset's final County Championship match of the season ended in a draw against Surrey at Taunton on Sunday. BBC Sport's report, supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, said he became the eighth player to make a first-class triple century for the county, whose 731 was their second-highest innings total.

Abell resumed on 284 not out and reached 300 with a single off Dan Worrall from his 402nd delivery. His final season tally was 1,287 runs, leaving him one behind Nottinghamshire's Joe Clarke in the Division One scoring standings. The innings lasted more than nine hours before he was the last Somerset batter dismissed.

Another record came through Abell's partnership with Migael Pretorius. Their 195-run ninth-wicket stand surpassed Somerset's previous best of 183, according to the BBC report. Pretorius advanced from an overnight 72 to 84 before Worrall trapped him lbw. Rain interrupted Surrey's reply twice, and the points were shared: 13 for Somerset and 12 for Surrey.

Somerset's official scorecard records Abell's innings as 307 from 407 balls, including 31 fours and eight sixes, with Adam Thomas taking the catch off Reece Topley. Tom Lammonby's 229 was the other major contribution to the home side's total. Mahipal Lomror took four wickets for 212, while Worrall finished with three for 103 after Somerset had batted for 171.1 overs.

Surrey had made 422 in their first innings, with Dan Lawrence contributing 139 and Dom Sibley 72, so Somerset began the visitors' second innings with a 309-run advantage. Lewis Gregory dismissed Sibley without scoring and bowled Ryan Patel for 10. Archie Vaughan then removed Ollie Pope and Rory Burns, leaving Surrey 59-4 and still well short of making Somerset bat again.

Jack Leach added the wicket of Nik Gorantla for 28, but Ben Foakes and Lomror remained unbeaten to secure the draw. The club scorecard shows Foakes finishing on 27 and Lomror on 16 as Surrey reached 127-5 after 54 overs. Gregory returned two for 22 and Vaughan two for 69, but Somerset could not turn their substantial first-innings lead into a final-day victory.
