Australia rest pace trio as Marsh leads new-look squads against England
Australia have left Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood out of their squads for the home white-ball series against England, with Mitchell Marsh named captain in both formats. The ICC reported that the senior fast bowlers will miss the eight-match assignment as Australia prepare for Test series against New Zealand and India.
Watch the highlights:
The selection announcement covers three one-day internationals and five Twenty20 internationals. Nathan Ellis is also absent from the ODI squad while recovering from a side strain sustained against South Africa in September, although he has been selected for the T20 matches. Mahli Beardman, Oliver Peake, Jack Edwards and Liam Scott are among the players named in the 14-member ODI group.
According to the ICC, selection chair George Bailey highlighted the opportunities for players to demonstrate their abilities against England. He pointed to Scott's development and Beardman's Australia A performances, while identifying Lachlan Shaw and Sam Harper as players whose recent form had strengthened their cases for selection.
Cricket Australia reported that Shaw and Harper are the two uncapped members of the squads. Both have been selected for the T20 leg, with Josh Inglis among the Test players sitting out that portion of the tour. Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, Alex Carey and Cooper Connolly are also included for the ODIs but not the T20s.
The workload decisions come before a concentrated stretch of Test cricket. Cricket Australia's report sets out four home Tests against New Zealand, beginning in Perth on December 9, followed by five Tests in India and the 150th anniversary Test in Melbourne in March. Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood have just completed a three-Test series in South Africa.
The England fixtures begin with ODIs in Perth on November 13, Adelaide on November 15 and Hobart on November 18. The T20 series starts in Melbourne on November 21, then moves through the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney before concluding in Canberra on December 2. The final match falls one week before the New Zealand Test series begins.
