Robin Das trial on two rape charges set for January 2028
Former Essex cricketer Robin Das has been granted conditional bail ahead of a January 2028 trial. Essex says its decision not to renew his contract was separate from the legal proceedings.

Former Essex cricketer Robin Das is scheduled to stand trial on two rape charges on 10 January 2028, following a hearing at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, 9 October. LBC reported that the date was fixed at a short hearing, during which the judge described pressure on the court's caseload.

Watch the highlights:

Das, 24, of Leytonstone in east London, is accused of raping a woman twice in Brixton in March 2024. According to BBC News, the Metropolitan Police arrested him in August 2025 and he was charged in July 2026. The BBC reported that the trial is expected to last five days.

LBC reported that the judge said the court was struggling with incoming cases and could not accommodate cases involving defendants in custody within the required time limits. Das spoke only to confirm his identity and his understanding of when he next had to attend court. He was released on conditional bail at the conclusion of Friday's hearing.

Essex suspended Das after he was charged and did not renew his contract at the end of the season, BBC News reported. The club said the decision not to renew his contract was separate from the ongoing legal proceedings. It also acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and declined to comment further on the circumstances of the case.

In an earlier club statement reproduced by LBC, Essex said the alleged incident occurred outside its activities. The county said it had remained in contact with the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Professional Cricketers' Association, the Cricket Regulator and the player. That statement described an immediate and continuing suspension and said Essex would follow the relevant legal processes and guidance.

Das made his Essex debut in 2020 at the age of 18, according to LBC. The BBC reported that he played 60 times for the county, with his final appearance coming against Middlesex in the One-Day Cup on 21 July. The two charges remain allegations awaiting trial.
