Newcastle Sign Amar Dedić From Benfica on Five-Year Deal
Newcastle United have signed Bosnia and Herzegovina full-back Amar Dedić from Benfica on a five-year contract. The 24-year-old becomes the Magpies’ sixth senior addition of the summer.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina full-back Amar Dedić from Benfica on a five-year contract. The Premier League club announced the deal on Tuesday, confirming that the 24-year-old will wear the No. 37 shirt and becomes its sixth senior addition of the summer transfer window. Newcastle did not disclose the transfer fee, while the Guardian reported it at £29.5 million.

Watch the highlights:

Dedić arrives with experience on both sides of defence. Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said the club views him as capable of playing on the right or left, and described him as a player who can contribute defensively and in attack. His arrival also reunites him with head coach Matthias Jaissle, under whom he previously played in Austria.

The pair worked together during Dedić’s development with FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg. Dedić joined Salzburg’s youth academy in 2015 after spells with LUV Graz and Sturm Graz, then signed professional terms in 2019. After time with Liefering and a loan at Wolfsberger AC, he returned to Salzburg and made 95 appearances in all competitions, according to Newcastle’s official account of his career.

Dedić later spent part of the 2024-25 season on loan at Marseille, making 10 Ligue 1 appearances. He moved permanently to Benfica last summer and subsequently played for the Portuguese club at St. James’ Park in a Champions League match last October. The Guardian reported that his familiarity with Jaissle’s methods was a significant factor in Newcastle’s move for him.

The defender is also an established Bosnia and Herzegovina international. Newcastle said he has earned 31 senior caps, including three appearances at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Born in Zell am See, Austria, Dedić represents Bosnia and Herzegovina at international level.

Newcastle’s announcement included Dedić saying he was happy to reunite with Jaissle and eager to begin playing for the club. His signing adds a senior full-back to a squad that, according to the Guardian, has been short of options on the right while Tino Livramento recovers from a calf injury. Newcastle are due to open their Premier League season at home to Liverpool.
