Memphis Depay agrees reduced terms to extend Corinthians stay through 2028
Memphis Depay has agreed to reduce his financial demands and sign a new contract with Corinthians through 2028, reversing the Brazilian club’s earlier decision not to extend his deal. BBC Sport reported that club president Osmar Stabile confirmed the agreement after direct talks with the Netherlands forward, whose previous contract was signed in 2024.
Watch the highlights:
The development follows a public dispute over the proposed extension. Corinthians withdrew an agreement last week because of financial concerns, prompting Depay to accuse the club of unacceptable conduct. Stabile said negotiations were difficult and lengthy but that the player ultimately made a substantial reduction that improved the terms for Corinthians.
Stabile did not disclose figures in his comments. BBC Sport cited ESPN Brasil as reporting that Depay will waive about 21 million Brazilian reais, listed as approximately £2.9 million, from the 75 million reais the club owes him. Under that report, the remaining 54 million reais would be paid in four instalments beginning in January 2027, and Corinthians would lose the discount if payments are late.
ESPN Brasil also reported that the new two-year agreement is worth a total of 135 million reais, approximately £19.1 million. Those financial details remain attributed reports rather than figures confirmed publicly by Corinthians. Stabile said he believes the club can afford the revised contract and emphasized that Depay’s desire to stay helped the sides find a workable arrangement.
Depay, 32, joined Corinthians after leaving Atletico Madrid in May 2024. He has scored 20 goals in 79 appearances for the Sao Paulo club and contributed to two trophy-winning campaigns: the 2025 Copa do Brasil and this year’s Supercopa do Brasil. Corinthians are currently ninth in Brazil’s Serie A.
The forward is also the Netherlands’ all-time leading goalscorer. At the 2026 World Cup, however, he did not score across three appearances as the Dutch team was eliminated in the last 32. His new agreement now keeps him at Corinthians beyond the short-term uncertainty that followed the club’s initial refusal to renew.
