Root sets out England rebuild priorities before meeting new coach Fleming

Joe Root says England have emerged from a disrupted Test summer with a clearer understanding of what is expected of their players, while stressing that changes to the team's culture remain unfinished. His comments followed the completion of a 3-0 series victory over Pakistan, with a coaching handover now approaching.

According to the Guardian, new Test coach Stephen Fleming is due to arrive in England on Monday and has meetings arranged with Root and interim coach Marcus Trescothick. Root said the squad's response to changes in leadership and off-field incidents had been encouraging. He described England as being in a better position, but presented the recent progress as a starting point rather than a completed recovery.

BBC Sport reported that Root first resumed the captaincy for June's second Test against New Zealand after Ben Stokes was omitted for breaking a team curfew. Stokes subsequently retired following the series defeat, and Brendon McCullum was dismissed as coach. Root, who previously led the Test side from 2017 to 2022, then received the captaincy on a permanent basis for a second spell.

Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Root placed particular emphasis on the team's development away from the field. He said players understood both their responsibilities as cricketers and the standards expected of their behaviour. He also acknowledged that England remained a work in progress, saying the group would need to sustain those standards daily to earn supporters' trust and respect.

The Pakistan series provided opportunities for players adjusting to the changed side. BBC Sport highlighted contributions from Dan Lawrence, who took Stokes' place, and Jordan Cox. England finished the assignment with an eight-wicket victory at Edgbaston, the Guardian reported, delivering the clean sweep Root said the team had targeted at the start of the series.

Root nevertheless cautioned that building a team culture could not be accomplished overnight or within a few weeks. In comments reported by the Guardian, he said the next step was to continue the work already begun. The scheduled discussions with Fleming and Trescothick come as England move from the interim coaching arrangement towards their next phase under the new Test coach.
