Sabalenka routs Iatcenko to extend US Open winning streak to 15

Aryna Sabalenka powered into the third round of the US Open with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over qualifier Polina Iatcenko on Wednesday. The world No. 1 completed the second-round match in 54 minutes and extended her winning streak at the tournament to 15 matches, according to the WTA.

Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion in New York, established control quickly by building a double-break advantage in the opening set. The WTA reported that she attacked Iatcenko's second serve for winners on both of those break points, striking once from each wing. She finished the match with six breaks of serve, three in each set.

The difference in attacking output was pronounced. Sabalenka recorded 24 winners while Iatcenko produced three. She also won 16 of 24 points played on Iatcenko's first serve and 14 of 21 on the qualifier's second serve. At the net, Sabalenka won eight of her 11 points.

Iatcenko got on the scoreboard late in the 24-minute first set and broke Sabalenka during the second, but the Russian was still behind 3-1 after that break. The match was only Iatcenko's second appearance in a Grand Slam main draw and her second tour-level main draw overall.

The 22-year-old qualifier had reached round two by defeating Renata Zarazua 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, winning the deciding match tiebreak 10-7. The WTA listed that contest at three hours and 27 minutes, making it the eighth-longest match on the women's tour this season. Her run ended against a player who has now won 25 consecutive matches against qualifiers and lucky losers.

Sabalenka will face Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova on Friday for a place in the fourth round. It will be their fourth meeting, with Sabalenka holding a 3-0 head-to-head record. The top seed has also won her past 23 second-round matches at Grand Slam tournaments and remains in contention for a third consecutive US Open women's singles title.
