Harvey Barnes Double Sends Newcastle Past West Brom in Carabao Cup

Harvey Barnes scored twice as Newcastle United beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 at St James' Park to reach the Carabao Cup third round. The Guardian reported that the result gave Matthias Jaissle his first competitive victory since succeeding Eddie Howe as Newcastle head coach and secured an away tie against Millwall.

West Brom took the lead in the 19th minute through Isaac Price. The midfielder curled a free-kick from 25 yards around Newcastle's defensive wall and beat debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen at the near post. The Championship side, managed by James Morrison, had started the match confidently after winning its first two league games of the season.

Newcastle responded through Bazoumana Toure after a move involving two other recent arrivals. Sean Steur carried the ball forward and found right-back Amar Dedic, whose cross was turned in by Toure from close range. It was the winger's first goal for Newcastle after joining from Hoffenheim.

Barnes replaced Toure at halftime and put the home side ahead three minutes into the second half. His first attempt following a corner was blocked, but he reacted to score from close range at the second opportunity. West Brom later drew level when Lewis Hall handled inside the penalty area and Price converted the resulting penalty for his second goal of the match.

With extra time approaching, Barnes scored the winner in the 81st minute. Dedic delivered another low cross from the right and Barnes swept his finish beyond goalkeeper Matt Ingram. Dedic therefore supplied two assists in a performance praised by Jaissle, who said the defender had adapted quickly despite joining Newcastle late.

The narrow win continued Newcastle's unbeaten competitive start under Jaissle after a home draw with Liverpool in the Premier League. New signing Nico Gonzalez, a midfielder acquired from Manchester City, was presented to the crowd before kickoff but did not play. West Brom pushed Newcastle throughout the tie, and Morrison said afterward that his team had caused the hosts problems. Newcastle nevertheless advanced to the last 32, where its trip to Millwall is scheduled in the next round of the competition.
