Tottenham Beat Charlton 5-1 as Sávio Scores on Debut

Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the Carabao Cup third round with a 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday. The Guardian reported that Sávio marked his debut with a goal during a decisive substitute appearance, while Spurs also received goals from Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke, Kevin Danso and Ben Davies.

Charlton had opportunities before Tottenham took control. Greg Docherty forced Antonin Kinsky into a save with a drive through a crowded area, and Nathan Asiimwe sent a header narrowly wide. At the other end, Solanke had an effort blocked before goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks stopped Archie Gray’s attempt from the rebound.

Moore broke the deadlock late in the first half, moving in from the right and striking from the edge of the penalty area. Solanke doubled the lead before halftime after Charlton failed to clear a bouncing ball in their box. Lucas Bergvall’s shot was blocked, but the loose ball reached Solanke, who finished into the bottom corner.

Tottenham extended the advantage after Roberto De Zerbi introduced Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven and Danso. According to The Guardian’s match report, Danso scored with his first touch, heading in a Mateus Fernandes free-kick. The goal put Spurs three ahead and left Charlton with a steep route back into the second-round tie.

Sávio then entered for his first Tottenham appearance following his move from Manchester City. He scored 11 minutes after coming on, carrying the ball inside from the right before driving a low finish into the near corner. The Brazilian was involved again soon afterward when another effort struck teammate Davies and went in, with the goal credited to the defender.

Charlton manager Nathan Jones had made 10 changes from the side that beat West Ham on Saturday, The Guardian reported. His team claimed a late consolation when substitute Lloyd Jones headed in from a corner, but Tottenham’s progress was already secure. Spurs will visit Liverpool in the third round, with the tie scheduled for September.
