Rangers rescue Hearts draw as Celtic are held by Dundee United
Rangers and Celtic both recovered from losing positions to draw 2-2 on Wednesday, leaving Rangers four points behind their Glasgow rivals. According to Sky Sports, Olwethu Makhanya headed Rangers level in the 89th minute at Hearts, denying the hosts victory on Derek McInnes' return to Tynecastle.
Watch the highlights:
McInnes faced boos from home supporters on his first visit since leaving for Ibrox in June. Kevin Kelsy gave Rangers the lead after 16 minutes, but Hearts reversed the score after half-time. Claudio Braga equalised in the 48th minute before Calvin Miller scored nine minutes later, converting after Braga's effort was deflected into his path.
Makhanya's header came from a Bouanani free-kick. Rangers then had an opportunity to win through Dujon Sterling, whose attempt went straight to goalkeeper Beau Reus. Hearts remained four points behind Rangers and extended their unbeaten home league run to 26 matches, Sky Sports reported.
At Celtic Park, Celtic's official match report described another game in which an early advantage disappeared before the interval. Camilo Durán opened the scoring in the 18th minute after Benjamin Nygren's header and a Kasper Høgh lay-off helped create the chance. It was the fourth consecutive league fixture in which Durán had scored. Zac Sapsford headed Dundee United level ten minutes later, and Neil Farrugia put the visitors ahead three minutes after that following a corner.
Martin O'Neill responded at half-time by introducing Jota and Haissem Hassan for Høgh and Callum Osmand. Both substitutes contributed to Celtic's attacking efforts, with Hassan forcing a save. Scales eventually supplied the equaliser after the hour: Celtic worked a short corner to Jota, whose cross was met by the defender's run and header.
Neither side could produce a winner. Celtic continued searching for a third goal, but United also threatened on the break and required saves from Sam Johnstone. O'Neill introduced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Landon Emenalo and Shim Mheuka late on, without changing the outcome. Celtic's pressure ended with a point rather than the home victory they had pursued.
