McKenna double leads Australia to 7-1 win over Haiti
Leticia McKenna scored twice on her first Australia start as the Matildas defeated Haiti 7-1 in Chambly, France, to finish their October international window. Daniela Galic also registered her first senior international goal, with Football360 reporting that Australia's younger players made a significant contribution to the victory alongside the established attacking partnership of Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord.
Watch the highlights:
According to the national team's official match report, McKenna opened the scoring after 80 seconds, converting Clare Wheeler's cutback. Melchie Dumornay quickly equalised for Haiti, who continued to threaten on the counterattack. McKenna restored Australia's advantage before half-time when Hayley Raso's blocked attempt left her with another opportunity, sending the Matildas into the interval 2-1 ahead.
Australia extended that lead when Kerr forced an own goal after receiving a pass from Foord. The captain then supplied Foord for Australia's fourth in the 65th minute. Coach Joe Montemurro subsequently introduced four substitutes: Remy Siemsen, Galic, Alexia Apostolakis and Holly McNamara, replacing Raso, Kaitlyn Torpey, McKenna and Kerr as Australia changed its attacking personnel.
Galic converted a pass from Alana Murphy for her first senior international goal. Wheeler then scored from the right before McNamara completed the scoring late on. The official report also recorded a goalkeeper change, with Chloe Lincoln replacing Mackenzie Arnold for the closing stages as Montemurro gave further members of his squad time on the pitch.
The match statistics showed Australia turning a relatively narrow possession advantage into a much larger gap in chances. The Matildas had 53 percent of possession and attempted 17 shots to Haiti's seven, according to the national team's match dashboard. Australia also led the big-chance count seven to one, underlining the difference between the teams despite Haiti's early equaliser.
The result followed Australia's 4-2 loss to Germany earlier in the window. ABC's reporting on that match noted goals from Kerr and McNamara, with Germany scoring twice late in the game through Camilla Kuver and Sjoeke Nusken. The Haiti victory therefore gave Australia a winning finish after the defeat in Karlsruhe.
