Cheltenham beat Spurs on penalties as Notts County and Oldham advance
Richarlison scored for Tottenham’s under-21s, but Cheltenham won their EFL Trophy shootout. Notts County and Oldham secured places in the second round.

Cheltenham Town defeated Tottenham Hotspur's under-21s 7-6 on penalties in the EFL Trophy after George Miller's stoppage-time equaliser forced a shootout. Richarlison scored during the match and converted his penalty, but the Brazil international could not prevent the young Spurs side losing the group-stage contest, BBC Sport reported.

Watch the highlights:

Miller opened the scoring for Cheltenham before Richarlison met a cross from the right with a first-time finish to equalise. Miracle Adewole then gave Tottenham the lead. Miller struck again deep into added time to make it 2-2, leaving the result to be settled from the spot, where the League Two team prevailed.

Richarlison, 29, has not been named in Tottenham's 25-player Premier League squad. According to the BBC, his only senior appearance for Spurs this season came in their 3-0 defeat at Brentford on the opening weekend in August. His goals against Cheltenham therefore came during an outing for the club's under-21 team rather than the senior side.

Elsewhere, Notts County advanced to the second round by beating Nottingham Forest's under-21s 5-1. Luka Smyth, Jacob Bedeau, Lee Ndlovu, Connor Grant and Callum Roberts scored as County built a five-goal lead. Buba Sanneh replied in added time, but Forest's late goal did not alter the outcome of the meeting between the Nottingham clubs.

Oldham Athletic also secured progression, overcoming Leeds United's under-21s 4-2 at Boundary Park. Noah Chilvers opened the scoring with a penalty before Callum Mills equalised. Carrick Njinko put Leeds ahead, only for Kane Drummond, Josh Hawkes and Kai Payne to score for Oldham and complete the home side's recovery from a 2-1 deficit.

Gillingham survived a Brighton under-21 comeback to win 4-3 after establishing a 4-0 advantage. Shane Nti scored twice for Brighton and Tyler Silsby added their third in the final minute. Walsall similarly held on against Fulham's under-21s, winning 3-2 after taking a three-goal lead into half-time before conceding twice after the interval.

Chelsea's under-21s beat Reading 2-0 through two first-half goals from Chizaram Ezenwata. Chelsea finished with five points from three games, but their progress was not yet assured. The BBC reported that they would advance unless Reading beat Bristol Rovers by four goals in the group's remaining fixture.
