Salech praises Moylan partnership after scoring winner on Cardiff return
Yousef Salech has highlighted his partnership with Jack Moylan after returning from a five-week injury absence to score Cardiff City's winner against Birmingham City. Speaking to BBC Sport, the striker said their contrasting styles helped both players, with Moylan's mobility complementing his own ability to draw defenders towards him.
Salech's involvement on Saturday changed just before kick-off. BBC Sport reported that Krystian Bielik developed a groin problem during the warm-up, prompting the striker's late promotion to the starting side. Cardiff had intended to give Salech no more than 45 minutes, but he completed the match despite the wet conditions.
The decisive moment came in the 31st minute of Cardiff's 1-0 Championship victory. As Sky Sports reported, Salech collected Ollie Tanner's delivery, held off Phil Neumann and turned to finish past James Beadle. It was a successful response to an earlier setback: Beadle had saved his penalty after Tomoki Iwata brought down Perry Ng at a corner.
Cardiff continued to create chances after the interval. Beadle stopped Cian Ashford with his legs following an attacking move involving Tanner and Salech, while the returning forward also sent an effort narrowly wide. The result gave Cardiff three consecutive home wins following their promotion from League One and stopped Birmingham's sequence of three victories without conceding, according to Sky Sports.
Salech also described the emotional impact of Cardiff's visit to Aberfan during the week. He told the BBC that staff had explained the 1966 disaster to the squad before players visited the memorial and met people affected. He suggested the experience might have contributed to the team's extra determination, while also acknowledging Cardiff's improving form.
The match itself included a tribute marking 60 years since the disaster. Sky Sports reported that both teams wore black armbands and observed a minute's silence before kick-off. Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy, who was serving a touchline ban, watched his team secure another home victory on an afternoon when Salech's unexpected start proved decisive.
