Isak scores as Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield
Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday, October 25, with both goals arriving inside the opening 21 minutes. The club's official results record lists a Pascal Gross own goal in the 17th minute and an Alexander Isak finish four minutes later as the decisive contributions.
Watch the highlights:
According to Sky Sports, the victory lifted Liverpool above Chelsea into fourth place, one point behind Brighton. It was Andoni Iraola's first home Premier League win as Liverpool head coach and the team's fourth successive victory across all competitions. Brighton suffered only their second league defeat of the season.
Florian Wirtz's shot took a deflection off Gross for the opener. Bradley Barcola then supplied the pass from the right for Isak to double the advantage. Brighton had already missed an opportunity through Yasin Ayari, who subsequently hit the post with a shot from outside the penalty area.
The result changed Liverpool's recent league record at Anfield. Their official results show a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest in August, a goalless meeting with Fulham in September and a 3-0 defeat by Manchester City earlier in October. Against Brighton, Liverpool scored twice without reply after failing to score in either of those two preceding home league fixtures.
Isak's contribution also followed his winning goal in the 2-1 victory at Brentford on October 17, when Liverpool recovered from a first-half deficit. The club's results list also records his goal in the 1-0 win at Bournemouth and both strikes in the 2-0 victory at Ipswich in September. Those away goals had helped Liverpool collect points before Sunday's breakthrough at home.
Brighton finished with just one shot on target despite having 64 per cent possession, Sky Sports reported. Liverpool could have extended their lead, but Bart Verbruggen saved efforts from Ronald Araujo and Cody Gakpo. Wirtz was replaced after hurting his ankle; both the player and Iraola indicated the problem might be minor, while making clear that further assessment was still needed.
