West Brom Stun Preston with Crucial Away Victory to Climb Away from Championship Relegation Zone
West Bromwich Albion delivered a composed and determined performance to defeat Preston North End 2-1 at Deepdale on Friday, climbing six points clear of the Championship relegation zone with a crucial away victory.
Watch the highlights:
The Baggies struck first through captain Jed Wallace, who converted a penalty in the 23rd minute after Kyle Naughton was brought down in the box. Wallace's composed finish past Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman gave the visitors a deserved lead and settled early nerves.
Preston responded strongly after halftime, with forward Troy Parrott equalizing in the 58th minute through a curling effort from the edge of the area that beat goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith at his near post. The goal sparked hope among the home crowd as the Lilywhites pushed for a second.
However, it was West Brom who found the decisive moment. Substitute Callum Styles, brought on just minutes earlier, latched onto a loose ball in the box following a corner and fired home in the 74th minute to restore the visitors' advantage. The goal proved sufficient as West Brom held on despite late Preston pressure.
Head coach Carlos Corberán praised his side's character after the match: "This victory reflects the hard work we've been putting in. The players showed great mentality to bounce back after Preston equalized and find that crucial second goal."
The win moves West Brom to 42 points, five points above the bottom three with three matches remaining. Preston remains in 17th place with 46 points. West Brom will look to build on this result when they face Bristol City next Tuesday.
