Title would be fitting tribute for Rangers captain Tavernier, says Röhl
Former Rangers assistant manager Helmut Röhl believes that winning the Scottish Premiership this season would represent the perfect tribute to captain James Tavernier, describing the 30-year-old as a player who has repeatedly proven his doubters wrong throughout his nine-year stint at Ibrox.
Watch the highlights:
Tavernier, who joined Rangers from Chesterfield in 2015, has been a pivotal figure for the Gers during their pursuit of Celtic at the top of the league. The right-back has contributed 10 goals and 14 assists in all competitions this season, continuing his remarkable record of scoring from open play and set pieces that has become a hallmark of his game.
"James has been exceptional this season," Röhl told reporters. "He leads by example on and off the pitch. Winning the title would mean everything to him and to this club. He has weathered criticism throughout his career and has always responded in the best possible way - with his performances."
The Rangers captain has accumulated 55 goals in 267 appearances for the Glasgow club, making him one of the most prolific defenders in European football during his tenure. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively has been crucial to Rangers' title challenge.
Rangers currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership, two points behind Celtic with four games remaining. Brendan Rodgers' side have a game in hand but face a challenging run-in that includes matches against both sides of the Old Firm. Tavernier's consistency could prove decisive in the final stretch of the campaign.
The England-born defender has previously spoken about his desire to win multiple titles with Rangers, having already helped the club end Celtic's nine-in-a-row dominance by winning the league in 2021. A second title would cement his legacy as one of Rangers' greatest-ever captains.
