Tenerife announce six days of mourning as Europe honours Jesús de Miguel
Tenerife have announced six official days of mourning for striker Jesús de Miguel, suspending all club activities as football paid tribute across Europe. According to BBC Sport, the club confirmed the measures on Tuesday evening after the forward died following a collision during Monday’s Spanish second division match against FC Andorra.

A minute’s silence took place before Tuesday’s Champions League fixtures. The tribute will also be observed at Wednesday’s matches and at Europa League and Conference League games this week, the BBC reported. At Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, supporters gathered to leave flowers and light candles beneath a black-and-white image of the player.
Tenerife will open the stadium on Saturday evening so fans can pay their respects. The club’s players, staff and officials will attend De Miguel’s funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo. In the statement announcing those arrangements, his family thanked people for their messages of support and asked for privacy. The club’s announcement set out both the suspension of activities and the opportunity for a public farewell.
De Miguel suffered head and chest injuries in a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono. The match was level at 2-2, seven minutes into stoppage time, when the incident happened. Medical staff treated the striker on the pitch before an ambulance took him to hospital. His condition was initially described as stable but serious on Monday, before deteriorating on Tuesday morning. He died at 07:00 GMT, BBC Sport reported.
Tributes also came from players and coaches beyond Tenerife. After scoring twice in Barcelona’s victory over Aston Villa, Raphinha used his post-match remarks to offer support to De Miguel’s family. Mikel Arteta expressed his grief at a news conference, while Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Nadal posted condolences on Instagram. Tenerife team-mates Juanjo Sánchez, Enric Gallego and Fran Sabina shared personal memories of their colleague and friend.
De Miguel joined Tenerife from Castellón in the summer of 2025 and helped the club win promotion to the second division. He began his career in Leganés’ youth system and later played for clubs including Unionistas de Salamanca before moving to Castellón in 2023. Tenerife’s planned stadium tribute will give supporters a chance to commemorate that contribution together.
