Tadej Pogacar Seizes Vuelta Control With Stage Four Solo Win

Tadej Pogacar took a commanding grip on the Vuelta a Espana with a long-range solo victory on stage four in Andorra on Tuesday. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider attacked with just over 50 kilometres remaining and finished two minutes and 39 seconds ahead of his nearest pursuers, according to Agence France-Presse reporting published by The Guardian.

Jarno Widar finished second and Felix Gall took third after the pair won the sprint from a select chase group. Primoz Roglic, Oscar Onley, Enric Mas and Sepp Kuss were also among the riders contesting the places behind Pogacar, while Richard Carapaz and Mattias Skjelmose lost contact with that group during the closing part of the stage.

The 104.8-kilometre mountain route started and finished in Andorra la Vella and contained four categorised climbs. Decathlon set the pace approaching the second climb, the Collada de Beixalis, before Pogacar launched the decisive move. Gall initially tried to follow, but the Slovenian dropped him and built an advantage that reached about three minutes.

Pogacar had already claimed the red leader's jersey by winning the opening individual time trial in Monaco. His chance to create further separation on Monday was halted when dangerous hail forced riders to seek shelter and stage three was abandoned. Racing resumed on Tuesday, and the 27-year-old converted the shortened return to the mountains into a major gain over his general-classification rivals.

The victory moved Pogacar three minutes and 21 seconds clear of fellow Slovenian Roglic in the overall standings. Pogacar is riding the Vuelta for the first time since 2019 and is seeking to become only the fourth rider to win the Tour de France and Vuelta in the same season. The five-time Tour champion is also pursuing a career sweep of cycling's three Grand Tours.

The race leaves Andorra for stage five on Wednesday. The next route covers 173.3 kilometres from Falset, southwest of Barcelona, to Roquetes in Spain and is expected to provide an opportunity for the sprinters after Pogacar's decisive display in the mountains.
