Sturm winner seals Slovenia comeback against Scotland at Hampden
Slovenia came from behind to beat Scotland 2-1 at Hampden Park on Tuesday, with Danijel Sturm scoring the decisive goal in their Nations League meeting. Ryan Christie had put the hosts ahead, but Aljosa Matko equalised before Sturm completed the turnaround.
Watch the highlights:
FotMob’s match record lists Christie’s opener in the 31st minute, with Oli McBurnie credited with the assist. Scotland took that advantage into the interval, only for Slovenia to draw level in the 56th minute. Sturm supplied Matko for the equaliser, beginning a second half in which both players scored and provided an assist.
The pair exchanged roles for the winner in the 71st minute, when Matko set up Sturm. Those two goals, scored 15 minutes apart, reversed the position Scotland had established before the break. The hosts were unable to add to Christie’s goal, and Slovenia left Glasgow with the victory.
Scotland made changes on either side of the winning goal. The match line-ups published by Mundo Deportivo record Kieron Bowie and Aaron Hickey replacing McBurnie and Stephen Welsh, while Findlay Curtis and Josh McPake also came on, replacing Ben Gannon-Doak and Christie. Robbie Ure later replaced John McGinn, but the substitutions did not produce an equaliser.
The defeat ended Scotland’s attempt to record consecutive victories at the close of Sebastien Pocognoli’s first camp as head coach. According to the Scottish FA’s account of the preceding match, Scotland had beaten North Macedonia 2-0 in Skopje on Saturday, with Bowie scoring early and McGinn converting a second-half penalty. That result had given Pocognoli his first win in charge of the national side.
The Scottish FA also noted that the teams’ earlier meeting in this Nations League campaign had finished goalless in Ljubljana. Tuesday’s return therefore brought a different outcome, despite Scotland taking the lead. It followed a significant personal milestone for captain Andy Robertson, who reached 100 international appearances in the North Macedonia victory. Scotland could not follow that successful evening with another win at home.
