BBC Sport reported an attendance of 68,173 at M&T Bank Stadium, describing it as the largest crowd for a rugby match in the United States. New Zealand opened the try-scoring through Codie Taylor before Damian de Allende and Morne van den Berg helped South Africa move ahead.

Will Jordan finished a 32-phase New Zealand attack before half-time, leaving South Africa 17-14 in front. After the interval, the Springboks extended their advantage through a rolling-maul try and a Pieter-Steph du Toit score following a blindside break by Van den Berg.

Ethan Blackadder's try brought New Zealand within eight points in the final quarter. Arendse then struck after an All Blacks attack broke down, and Hanekom added another try. Beauden Barrett scored late for New Zealand, but the visitors could no longer rescue a draw in the series.

The outcome completed a reversal of the position after the opening Test. Sky Sports' series results show that New Zealand won 33-16 at Ellis Park before South Africa replied with a 33-26 victory in Cape Town. The Springboks then took the lead with a 29-24 win at FNB Stadium, leaving the All Blacks needing victory in Baltimore to finish level. Instead, South Africa finished with three consecutive wins.

That third Test had already demonstrated how closely the teams could be matched. Sky Sports reported four tries apiece in Soweto, where Arendse, Jesse Kriel and Malcolm Marx scored for South Africa alongside a penalty try. The five-point victory also gave Siya Kolisi his record 55th win as Springboks captain. A week later, the deciding fixture produced a wider margin and confirmed South Africa as the series winners.
