Richarlison omitted from Tottenham league squad after rejecting extension

Tottenham have omitted Richarlison from their 25-man Premier League squad after the Brazilian forward declined a contract extension and made clear that he wanted to leave the club, according to reporting by The Guardian and the Press Association. Manager Roberto De Zerbi said the decision followed conversations held at the start of preseason about the player's future.

Richarlison was Tottenham's leading scorer in the Premier League last season, but he did not play in last weekend's defeat by Newcastle. During that period, a possible return to Everton, one of his former clubs, was under discussion. The Guardian reported that the 29-year-old ultimately rejected that move and remained at Tottenham beyond the transfer deadline.

Tottenham's attacking options changed when the club brought in Omar Marmoush from Manchester City. De Zerbi said there was then no place for Richarlison on the league list, with Dominic Solanke and Marmoush now the forwards he plans to work with. Richarlison has spent this week training separately from the first team.

De Zerbi said he had been happy to retain Richarlison and asked him about extending his deal during preseason. According to the manager, the player did not want to do so and had repeatedly shown that he wanted a transfer. De Zerbi defended Tottenham's handling of the situation, saying the outcome was driven by Richarlison's decisions rather than an attempt by the club to force him out.

The exclusion applies to Tottenham's Premier League squad for the campaign. The report did not state that Richarlison had agreed a move elsewhere, and he remains under contract with Spurs. His omission instead leaves him outside the group registered for league matches following the close of the transfer window.

Tottenham are also integrating deadline-day loan signing Mykhailo Mudryk, who De Zerbi said could play up to 30 minutes against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Savio is available again, while James Maddison is likely to miss the match as he recovers from a shoulder fracture.
