Portugal end Northern Ireland's World Cup bid with 7-1 aggregate win
Northern Ireland's hopes of reaching the 2027 Women's World Cup ended on Tuesday as Portugal won 3-1 in Portimao to complete a 7-1 aggregate victory in their first-round European play-off. BBC Sport reported that Kess Elmore scored on her first start, but the hosts responded with three goals to settle the second leg.
Watch the highlights:
According to the Irish FA's match report, Michael McArdle made three changes to the side beaten 4-0 in Larne, bringing in Elmore, Keri Halliday and Casey Howe. Portugal changed six players. Northern Ireland went ahead when the home defence failed to clear Rebecca Holloway's long throw and Elmore finished from inside the penalty area.
Portugal equalised in the 45th minute through Carolina Santiago. Her first attempt struck the woodwork, but she converted the rebound, with the goal confirmed after a video review. The teams were therefore level on the night at the interval, although Portugal still held the four-goal advantage established in the opening leg.
The Irish FA reported that substitute Jessica Silva put Portugal ahead in the 74th minute, meeting Telma Encarnacao's cross with her chest. Carole Costa later converted a penalty awarded for Ellie Mason's handball. Lucy-Jayne Grant and Naomi McLaughlin both made their senior Northern Ireland debuts as substitutes during the second half.
Despite elimination, McArdle told BBC Sport NI he saw progress in the team's approach and the contribution of newcomers. Four players made their debuts across the two matches. He praised Elmore's impact and said the new arrivals would strengthen the group, while acknowledging his frustration at the scoreline. He also called for patience as the team develops its style.
Northern Ireland contested the tie without several established players, including captain Simone Magill, Laura Rafferty, Nadene Caldwell and Caragh Hamilton, BBC Sport reported. McArdle said he wanted a team with greater energy, mobility and versatility, and viewed the performances as a step towards that identity. His assessment focused on the squad's development even as the aggregate result brought this World Cup qualifying campaign to a close.
