Portugal take four-goal lead over Northern Ireland in World Cup play-off
Portugal beat Northern Ireland 4-0 at Inver Park in the first leg of their 2027 Women's World Cup play-off semi-final, leaving the hosts with a four-goal deficit before Tuesday's return in Portimao. BBC Sport reported that Northern Ireland manager Michael McArdle acknowledged the scale of the setback while pointing to the experience gained by younger members of his squad.
Watch the highlights:
The visitors established a 3-0 lead before half-time. Telma Encarnacao opened the scoring from the penalty spot after debutant defender Jane McMaster conceded the penalty, and Jessica Silva also scored. An own goal from Rebecca Holloway completed Portugal's first-half scoring, putting Northern Ireland under pressure well before the interval and giving the visitors control of the tie.
Northern Ireland were offered a route back into the match when Catarina Amado received a second yellow card with 26 minutes remaining. The hosts improved in the second half, but could not turn their numerical advantage into a goal. Instead, Fatima Pinto extended Portugal's lead, leaving Northern Ireland further behind despite the visitors having been reduced to 10 players.
The home side also finished with 10 after Cora Chambers was dismissed in added time for grabbing Carolina Correia's hair. Chambers will miss the second leg. Her absence adds to the difficulties facing McArdle, whose side entered the opening match without experienced players including captain Simone Magill, Laura Rafferty and Nadene Caldwell, according to the BBC report.
McArdle, who became Northern Ireland manager in March, gave McMaster her debut and introduced Kess Elmore and Charlotte Havern for their first caps from the bench. Havern, a 16-year-old Cliftonville player, came on with 10 minutes left. The manager said exposing younger players to matches at this level was important to the team's longer-term prospects of qualifying for major tournaments.
The immediate task is the return match in Portugal, with McArdle saying his players would regroup after the disappointment and travel. He felt the margin was harsher than the performance warranted, but recognised how difficult the deficit would be to overturn. Iceland are the likely opponents for the eventual winners after also taking a 4-0 first-leg lead, against Croatia; neither tie has yet been completed.
