Portugal beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in World Cup play-off first leg
Portugal established a four-goal advantage at Inver Park. Northern Ireland face a difficult return leg in Portimao after a match in which both teams had a player sent off.

Portugal defeated Northern Ireland 4-0 at Inver Park to take control of their Women's World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final. BBC Sport reported that three first-half goals put the visitors in command, before they added another after being reduced to 10 players.

Watch the highlights:

Telma Encarnacao opened the scoring with an eighth-minute penalty following a handball decision against debutant Jane McMaster. She then supplied Jessica Silva, whose finish went in off the crossbar in the 22nd minute. Rebecca Holloway's own goal from Catarina Amado's cross made it 3-0 five minutes later, leaving Northern Ireland chasing a substantial deficit.

Amado received a second booking after fouling Kess Elmore, giving the hosts a numerical advantage. Ellie Mason subsequently tested goalkeeper Ines Pereira, but Fatima Pinto scored Portugal's fourth from distance. Northern Ireland also finished a player short after substitute Cora Chambers was dismissed for pulling Carolina Correia's hair.

Speaking to BBC Sport afterwards, Northern Ireland manager Michael McArdle acknowledged how severely the result had damaged his team's chances of progressing. He felt the margin was harsher than the performance deserved and identified positives, particularly in the second half, while recognising the disappointment his players would have to absorb before turning their attention to the return fixture.

McArdle also emphasised the longer-term value of exposing less experienced players to international football. Northern Ireland were missing several established players, including captain Simone Magill, Laura Rafferty and Nadene Caldwell. McMaster made her debut in defence, while Elmore and 16-year-old Charlotte Havern earned their first caps from the bench. The manager regarded those opportunities as part of building a squad capable of qualifying for future tournaments.

The second leg is scheduled for Tuesday in Portimao, with Northern Ireland facing the task of overturning a four-goal disadvantage. Chambers will be unavailable following her dismissal. McArdle said the team would regroup for that match, balancing the immediate qualifying challenge with the longer development process. Portugal hold a commanding lead, but the tie has not yet been completed.
