Parkinson demands Wrexham self-assessment and accepts scrutiny after defeat
Phil Parkinson has called for individual accountability after Wrexham lost at Sheffield United. The manager said he would examine his own contribution and would not avoid criticism of the performance.

Phil Parkinson has called on Wrexham's players to examine their individual performances and said he will accept scrutiny of his own role following a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United. Speaking to BBC Radio Wales after the Championship match, the manager said the response had to include an honest assessment from both himself and his squad.

Watch the highlights:

Parkinson focused much of his criticism on the opening half at Bramall Lane, when Ben Brereton Diaz scored the decisive goal in the 30th minute. BBC Sport reported that Wrexham completed only nine passes in the final third before the interval, 68 fewer than Sheffield United. Their first shot on target did not arrive until Sam Smith's header was saved by Michael Cooper in the 96th minute.

The manager said players needed to look at whether they were winning their individual contests against opponents. He acknowledged the significance of his own contribution but argued that responsibility also rested with each member of the team. His immediate demand was for Wrexham to be ready to compete with Middlesbrough on Wednesday after a first-half display he felt had allowed United to look particularly strong.

To illustrate the standards he expected, Parkinson recalled Wrexham's meetings with Sheffield United in 2023, when his side were still a National League club. He pointed to the 3-3 home draw and their subsequent performance away as examples of a less accomplished squad competing forcefully. Although he recognised that there had been good displays this season, he said the underdog mentality he associated with Wrexham had not appeared consistently.

Parkinson was appointed in the summer of 2021 and led Wrexham to three consecutive promotions between 2023 and 2025. The current campaign has brought a more difficult spell, with three defeats in their past four matches. Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers are their remaining opponents before the November international break, according to BBC Sport.

Asked about criticism, Parkinson said he would concentrate on his work rather than withdraw from it. He referred to being dropped as a player, dismissed as a manager and facing supporters' calls for his removal during his career. He also acknowledged that supporters had reason to be disappointed by the first-half performance and said he would not avoid the criticism that followed.
