Ovechkin Dazzles in Potential Farewell at Home as Capitals Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
Alex Ovechkin turned what may have been his final home game into a celebration to remember, helping the Washington Capitals blank the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 while fans chanted for one more year.

The crowd at Capital One Arena did not need a microphone. From the very first shift, the chant rang clear and it never really stopped: "One more year! One more year!"

If this turns out to be the last time Alex Ovechkin skated in front of his home fans, he gave them everything they could have wished for. The Washington Capitals beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 on Sunday, and the Great 8 was right at the heart of it. He assisted on the empty-net goal that sealed the win, he was his usual relentless self all over the ice, and afterward he soaked in the atmosphere like a man who understands exactly what he means to this city.

"I'll think about it," Ovechkin said with a smile, asked whether he would return for a 22nd NHL season. The response drew laughs from the assembled media, but it was no joke. The 40-year-old is having a genuinely excellent season by any measure. He leads the Capitals with 32 goals and 63 points. He is still one of the most dangerous players in hockey whenever he crosses the blueline with the puck.

There was a moment before the game that felt almost scripted. Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, the two icons who have defined this rivalry for two decades, stood at centre ice for the opening faceoff. It was the 100th meeting between them. Crosby, who has seen more of Ovechkin than anyone, offered his verdict with characteristic understatement.

"He came in with such high expectations, and he passed them," Crosby said. "To be the greatest goal scorer of all time and to do what he's done, it's impressive."

The win was critical for Washington's playoff push. The Capitals must win their regular-season finale in Columbus on Tuesday and get some help from the Philadelphia Flyers failing to pick up points in their remaining games. It is a tall order, but on this night, none of that mattered.

"You could tell, the game felt different and the night felt different," said head coach Spencer Carbery. "A lot of great moments. I just caught myself watching in certain moments, taking it all in."

Ovechkin turns 41 in September, but he shows no signs of slowing. Whether this was goodbye or au revoir, it was a performance the Washington faithful will not forget anytime soon.
