Marquinhos Rescues PSG as Bayern Open Bundesliga Defense With 5-1 Win

Paris Saint-Germain recovered from two goals down in stoppage time to earn a 2-2 draw at Lille on Friday, while Bayern Munich began its Bundesliga title defense with a 5-1 home victory over Stuttgart. The Guardian, citing agency reporting, said Marquinhos headed PSG's equalizer deep into added time after Vitinha had started the late recovery.

Lille went ahead in the 21st minute through Hakon Haraldsson. Olivier Giroud supplied a reverse pass for the Iceland international, who curled his finish beyond PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. The hosts then protected their advantage by defending compactly and directing PSG's attacks into wide areas.

Dilane Bakwa doubled Lille's lead in the 84th minute, apparently putting the match beyond the defending Ligue 1 champions. Vitinha changed the contest in the first minute of stoppage time, curling a shot into the top-left corner to reduce the deficit. Four minutes later, he delivered the cross from which Marquinhos headed the equalizer.

The result left PSG with a second consecutive 2-2 draw after the club had also been held by Rennes on the opening weekend. Despite its attacking options, PSG struggled to place shots on target for much of the game before the two late goals secured a point.

In Munich, Bayern produced a strong second half to overwhelm Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena. Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Diaz scored for Bayern, while Stuttgart defender Josha Vagnoman had an eventful night with goals at both ends. Vagnoman briefly brought Stuttgart level early in the second half before Bayern pulled away.

The victory extended Bayern's unbeaten run to 15 matches and gave the reigning champion a convincing start to the new Bundesliga campaign. The Guardian reported that Bayern had won the previous league title by 16 points and scored a record 122 goals, and its opening performance offered another display of the attacking depth that powered that campaign. Stuttgart had finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, according to the same report.
