Makhachev and Topuria War of Words Escalates Over UFC White House Booking Claims
The bitter rivalry between UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and featherweight kingpin Ilia Topuria has reached new heights as both fighters publicly clash over what really happened behind the scenes regarding a potential UFC White House booking.
The controversy stems from Topuria's recent claims during an interview with ABC that he was originally supposed to face Makhachev at the high-profile UFC White House event, only to have the Russian champion allegedly pull out due to injury. Instead, Topuria ended up facing interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje to unify the titles.
"My understanding from the UFC was that they weren't going to count on me for the White House fight, that I should do what I had to do," Topuria explained. "But I thought that was part of the negotiation. I went to the Dominican Republic, and there I received a call from the UFC, indicating that I might be at the White House to fight Islam Makhachev."
According to the Spanish champion, UFC President Dana White was set to announce the entire card within two days, leading Topuria to believe the Makhachev fight was confirmed. However, the situation allegedly changed when "Islam had been injured and that he would be fighting Justin Gaethje."
Makhachev fired back with his own version of events, categorically denying Topuria's account and painting a different picture of the negotiations. "I'm tired of hearing made-up stories from Topuria and his team," the Dagestani fighter stated emphatically. "I got the call and accepted the fight at the White House. The next day, I was told he asked for an unrealistic purse. The UFC declined, and he pulled out."
The current welterweight champion didn't hold back in his criticism of "El Matador," adding fuel to their ongoing feud. "Ilia, stop talking. Every interview you give tells a different story. You pulled out, and you know it."
This public back-and-forth has been brewing for over a year, with both champions repeatedly trading barbs through various media outlets. The tension initially sparked when both fighters began pursuing second titles in different weight classes, leading to accusations that each was avoiding the other.
Adding another layer to the controversy, UFC CEO Dana White previously denied that a Makhachev-Topuria fight was ever officially planned for the White House card, stating flatly "that's not true." Meanwhile, Topuria's manager, Malki Kawa, offered a diplomatic explanation, revealing that his client had accepted fights with both Makhachev and Gaethje but acknowledged the decision ultimately came down to "the numbers and the finances."
The dispute highlights the complex nature of UFC fight negotiations, where multiple factors including fighter availability, medical clearances, and financial terms must align for high-profile matchups to materialize.
Currently, Makhachev remains without a scheduled defense of his welterweight title, though the pound-for-pound standout is expected to return to action later this year. Topuria, fresh off his unification victory over Gaethje, continues to call out various opponents while maintaining his stance that Makhachev has been dodging him.
As both fighters continue to dominate their respective divisions, fans can only hope this war of words eventually translates into an actual fight inside the octagon, where the truth of who wanted to fight whom can finally be settled definitively.
