London Broncos face unfunded route into expanded Super League
London Broncos have accepted a zero-funding condition for possible Super League entry in 2027, the Guardian reported. The proposed move would bring the capital club into the top flight without a share of the central payments available to established members, rather than on equal financial terms.
Watch the highlights:
Love Rugby League reported on 23 October that clubs were open to admitting London even if the wider partnership between Super League and Australia's NRL did not begin until 2028. That route depended on the Broncos surrendering central distribution. The publication said clubs received around £1.3 million this year, while the amount available for 2027 remained unclear.
Love Rugby League also reported that York Knights and Toulouse Olympique originally agreed to join with about £650,000 each, half the funding of the other 12 clubs. London would receive none under the proposed arrangement. The same report said the Broncos believed commercial agreements available in Super League could outweigh their expected Championship distribution.
London's case comes after a season of success on the field. In its 8 October account of the IMG gradings, Love Rugby League reported that Jason Demetriou's team had completed a treble, adding the Championship Grand Final to the League Leaders' Shield and 1895 Cup. They beat Doncaster in the final, but those achievements did not put them among the highest-ranked 14 clubs.
Instead, London finished 16th with 9.77 grading points, behind Barrow Raiders on 9.85. York, the lowest-placed Super League club in the rankings, scored 13.24. Those figures underline the distinction between winning the Championship and obtaining a top-flight place through the grading system, which has influenced Super League membership in recent seasons. London's sporting results alone had not secured admission.
The proposed entry therefore remains tied to changes beyond the Championship results. Love Rugby League's funding report described London joining early as a possible element of the developing NRL relationship, while its gradings coverage said promotion was still expected despite the club's ranking. Acceptance of financial terms should not be confused with confirmation of a Super League place for 2027.
