Liverpool edge Chelsea 6-5 on penalties to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Liverpool advanced at Anfield after a 1-1 draw, with Wesley Fofana missing the decisive penalty. Giorgi Mamardashvili had kept the hosts alive by saving from Emmanuel Emegha.

Liverpool reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday, after the teams finished level at 1-1. Wesley Fofana sent the final kick over the crossbar, ending a contest in which both sides had earlier missed opportunities to settle the shootout. Chelsea's official match report confirmed the result and the sequence of penalties.

The goals during normal time also came from the spot. According to the Irish Examiner's match report, Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo, who had received a pass from Malo Gusto. Cody Gakpo equalised three minutes later when Fofana handled as he contested a corner with Virgil van Dijk.

The Irish Examiner reported that Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola made seven changes, selecting Lewis Koumas and James McConnell while keeping Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola among his substitutes. Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso made four changes. His return to his former club ended in elimination despite Chelsea taking the lead shortly before the interval.

Neither side found a winning goal in the second half. The Irish Examiner described Mike Penders denying Ronald Araujo and then Barcola, while Rogers had an attempt deflected behind. Chelsea's own account also highlighted Giorgi Mamardashvili's save from substitute Marco Palestra, whose chance followed a move involving Pedro Neto and Rogers. The goalkeepers helped keep the tie level until the shootout.

Chelsea's report detailed how the advantage changed hands during the penalties. Valentin Barco struck the post, but Kostas Tsimikas then missed a chance to send Liverpool through. Jordan Henderson converted to take the contest into sudden death. After further successful kicks, Penders saved from Gravenberch, giving Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha an opportunity to win it. Mamardashvili stopped his effort to keep Liverpool in the competition.

Joe Gomez then scored to put Liverpool 6-5 ahead, leaving Fofana needing to convert. His miss with the shootout's 16th kick completed Liverpool's progress and Chelsea's exit. Chelsea's report listed a home Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday as their next fixture, with a 12.30pm kick-off.
